CM Yogi Adityanath Inaugurated National Seminar on Tribal Icon Birsa Munda’s Legacy
Varanasi — A two-day national seminar themed on the legacy of tribal hero Birsa Munda was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath on Friday, July 18, at Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya. The event, held in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), focuses on the theme “Birsa Munda’s Legacy: A Catalyst for Tribal Empowerment and the National Movement.”
The seminar aims to promote research, dialogue, and academic exchange on Birsa Munda’s multifaceted contributions to tribal rights, social justice, and the freedom struggle. Over 100 research papers will be presented by eminent scholars, researchers, educators, and students from across the country.
Padma Shri awardee Ashok Bhagat is the keynote speaker, while Principal Alka Singh presides over the inaugural session. Dr. Samvedna Singh informed that the seminar features seven technical sessions over two days, facilitating in-depth academic discussions on Munda’s movement and its lasting impact.

Convenor Prof. Anjana Singh explains that the objective of the seminar is to explore Birsa Munda’s visionary leadership and examine his continued relevance in today’s socio-political context. Discussions will delve into his historic role in shaping tribal consciousness and inspiring socio-political movements. The seminar also serves as a platform to analyze tribal issues through historical, sociological, anthropological, and political lenses, with a focus on themes such as heritage, identity, and resistance.
This scholarly event provides a space for a critical re-evaluation of Birsa Munda’s life, struggles, and legacy, reaffirming his role as a symbol of empowerment and resistance within India’s tribal and national narratives.
